Judith Hunt and Steve Connelly

Judith discovered the power of credit trading systems while managing a £4 million sponsorship campaign for a young yachtsman.

Everything was going well. She had signed an international sponsor. They had a fabulous boat and a great team. Then two planes flew into the World Trade Centre in New York.

The sponsor withdrew leaving Judith with just two months to find £40,000 before the race began. So she joined a London-based trade exchange that gave her access to a community of 400 business owners who traded with each other without cash.

It worked on a pool system: members swapped services and products banking the value they had given as credits. These credits were used to buy what they needed. Judith searched the members' directory and started calling.

Swapping her event management skills for services, within two weeks she had sign makers painting logos on the hull. Accommodation was sorted out for the UK and France through various hotel groups. A printing company handled their press packs. Restaurants swapped unused space so Judith could arrange press and sponsor events. A car hire company traded a van. Even telecoms were arranged through the trade exchange.

Her sailing star not only entered the race; he won it.

From then on Judith was hooked on using this kind of exchange in all aspects of her business. When the trade exchange of which she was a member folded (when its parent withdrew funding), she decided to create a new system to replace it. A better one. One that harnessed all the benefits of the Internet as well as tapped into the new networking phenomenon in London.
